Located in Routt County, Colorado, we believe this home displays a fine example of vernacular architecture. The lot Kathy Clark planned to build her beam and post home on was absolutely beautiful. The gorgeous mountain backdrop lent some amazing scenery, but brought with it some real design challenges. The narrow lot was deep and had a considerable slope, making it a challenge to find appropriate scale for the house, the mountain, and the tiny mountain village that it's part of.

Kathy asked us to join her team after the architectural design had been resolved. Our job was to make the beam and post home into a real handmade timber frame. We drafted and engineered the solution to include environmentally friendly beetle-killed trees cut right off Kathy's property, furthering the connection of the building to the land that it occupies.

Because of the architectural design, we also built with environmentally certified, kiln-dried Douglas fir beams. some of the finest we've ever seen. These beams carried the long cantilevers in the roof and deck. The balance of the timber was beetle-killed Engelmann spruce from southern Colorado. We enjoyed the challenge of joining square timbers to round logs, using local materials and fitting all that timber into 1,920 square feet without overwhelming it. We also provided sustainably harvested full thickness (not ½" undersized, like most lumber from the lumberyard) white oak for the deck because it has the best chance to last in this outdoor climate.

What did Kathy think?

"Your communication was always timely; you did what you said you would, when you said you would. Your skillful crew was prepared and worked in an efficient manner, and they were always there for me when I had a question.  I feel that we formed a unique bond, knowing that they really cared about my house.

"I have to say that my experience with your company, Frameworks Timber, has been wonderful.  I have already recommended you. It has been a great pleasure to have y'all on my team, thank you!"
